Benidorm tributes to its patron saint on the 279th anniversary of her arrival in the city

Thousands of festive people take part in the traditional procession, which culminates with the verse by the children's queen and the words of the eldest queen to the Mare de Déu.

One more year Benidorm has taken to the acts of commemoration of the anniversary of the arrival of the patron saint to the city, which is turned 279 years. Thousands of festive people participated in the traditional procession and tribute in honour of the Mare de Déu del Sofratge (Our Lady of Sofratge), which began from Paseo de Colón to the church of Sant Jaume and Santa Anna.

The major and infantile queens of the Festes Majors Patronals of 2019, accompanied by their courts of honour were in charge of opening the pilgrimage, followed by the municipal corporation.

Social, cultural, festive and regional houses were the first to offer the image of the Mare de Déu del Sofratge, located at the doors of the church of Sant Jaume i Santa Anna. Yesterday wore a new crown. Then, it was the turn of the peñista's collective, the Associació de Penyes 'Verge del Sofratge', the Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals, the queens and ladies of the Festes Majors Patronals and the municipal corporation.

After the tribute, the children's queen recited verses dedicated to the patron saint; and the older queen. The main queen dedicated a few words to the Benidorm people, also to the Mare de Déu del Sofratge. At the end of the offering, a firework display was launched by the Turís Pyrotechnics.

The 16th  March began at 5.30 am with l'Alba, in which hundreds of Benidormans carried the patron saint through the streets of the old town and the three beaches of the city. At midday, before the Main Eucharist, Vicente Berenguer Devesa, Flag Bearer of the 2019 Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals, was announced. After the Eucharist, the Honorary Majorals of this year were also named.
